Utility Tree Worker (UTW) and Tree Trimmer Recertification

Stay current with safety standards and regulations for working around energized power lines and equipment.

Utility Tree Worker and Utility Tree Trimmer certifications are valid for five years and expire on June 30 of the fifth year after registration. If your Professional Vegetation Management certificate expires soon, register for this course to stay current.

  1. Check with PVMA regarding your certificate status if you are unsure.
  2. Register directly with Olds College for the course during the year that your UTT/UTW certificate expires.

By the end of this course, you'll be up to date on the latest Electrical and Communication Utility Systems Regulations for Utility Tree Workers and Trimmers. You will be able to:

  • Identify safe work practices around energized power lines and equipment
  • Request line outages and equipment blocking
  • Recognize safe clearance distances for various voltage levels
  • Properly maintain tools and equipment used in high-voltage environments
  • Implement current electrical safety standards on the job

FOLLOWING SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION:

  • Marks are sent to the student and PVMA as the certifying body.
  • The student is responsible to contact PVMA directly to complete the certification process.

Online Self-Directed

Dates: 2027 TBD

  • Class opens 2nd MONDAY of the month, closes the Following FRIDAY, with a scheduled proctored exam.
  • Online recertification can be taken consecutively (every 5 years). If you fail, recertification must be done on-campus.

Admission Requirements

  • Successful completion of Utility Tree Worker Safety Training and registration with PVMA.ca the full course. Please note that anyone who has failed an online electrical course must attend an in-person electrical recertification course and is not eligible for the online recertification course. For more information regarding certification rules and procedures, please contact PVMA.ca
  • You are only able to register for the course during the year that your UTT/UTW certificate expires. The course is open to everyone but only those that have existing UTT/UTW certificates will receive renewals. If your recertification has lapsed, then you will be required to take the in-class session to recertify.
There will be only one retake for the final online exam, a retake cannot occur prior to 30 days of the first attempt. If the student is not able to pass the retake exam, they will be required to take the in-class recertification.
